Alice Johannsen began studying art at the age of 10 as a
private pupil of Whittney Hubbard, noted Long Island artist. Majoring in
Fine Art in High School she won several awards and won her first major competition
at the age of 13 at the Rosa Bonheur Harms competition in New York City.
She continued
her art studies as a private pupil of Gladys Wiles Jepson, prominent portrait
painter. In college art took a back seat as she pursued a career as a Registered
Nurse and continued on that path until she retired in Hendersonville, North
Carolina. She once again renewed her interest in art and switched mediums
to watercolor. Since that time she has won numerous awards for her colorful
interpretation of local scenes and was honored by her colleagues in 2004
as Artist of the Year.
Her paintings
have been reviewed as "well designed with good control of the medium and
use of color."
